Genetic Factors May Play Role in Persistent HBV Infection

Researchers reported finding an association between a major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II allele and protection against persistent hepatitis B infection, a condition that predisposes individuals to chronic liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma.

The outcome of hepatitis B virus (HBV) does not seem to be determined to variations in virulence among viral strains, and the course of infection may be influenced by the host immune response, stated Mark R.
