HCV Infection Probably Had Common Origin in Town with High HBV Rate

Findings of a mass screening for hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibody performed in a Japanese town suggested a specific local origin of the infection and the presence of asymptomatic HCV carriers.

However, it was not possible to identify a single source of HCV infection, stated Hironobu Tawaraya and colleagues, Niigata University, Niigata City, Japan ("Epidemiologic Survey and Genetic Analysis of Endemic Hepatitis C Virus Infection in a Japanese Town with a High Prevalence of Hepatitis B Virus Carriers," Journal of Medical Virology, April 1995;45(4):367-372).
