Membrane Staining for HBsAg Correlates Well with Serum HBV-DNA

The membranous staining of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) on the hepatocyte may be considered a sensitive, specific marker of active hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication.

C-M. Chu and Y-F. Liaw, Chang Gung Medical College, Taipei, Taiwan, said that they tested the hypothesis that membranous staining of HBsAg on the hepatocyte is a marker of active viral replication in chronic HBV infection ("Membrane Staining for Hepatitis B Surface Antigen on Hepatocytes: A Sensitive and Specific Marker of Active Viral Replication in Hepatitis B," Journal of Clinical Pathology, May 1996;48(5):470-473).
