Two Hospitals Allow Kidney Transplantation from HCV-Positive Donors

Kidneys from hepatitis C virus (HCV)-positive donors may be given to recipients who are HCV-RNA positive, proposed researchers from Spain.

Jose M. Morales and colleagues, Hospital 12 de Octubre, Madrid, Spain, and colleagues stated that they based their opinion on the excellent results in graft and patient survival as well as the low occurrence of liver disease during three years after renal transplantation ("HCV and Organ Transplantation," the Lancet, May 6, 1995;345:1174-1175).

Morales et al. said that in 1990 two hospitals initiated the policy of accepting kidneys from HCV-positive donors for transplantation into HCV-positive recipients. ...
