Site-Directed Serology of Structural Proteins Designates Acute or Chronic Infection

Swedish researchers said they believe they have identified a candidate tool to simply and rapidly distinguish acute from chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection.

The method, based on multiple HCV core peptides, should be of interest for clinicians in cases of clinical hepatitis with detectable HCV RNA in serum and in which the clinical background is unknown, stated Zhu-Xu Zhang and colleagues, Huddinge University Hospital, Huddinge, Sweden ("Distinguishing Acute from Symptomatic Chronic Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection by Site-Directed Serology of the HCV Structural Proteins," the Journal of Infectious Diseases, May 1995;171:1356-1359).
