Blood Products Not Source of Infection in Israeli Hemophiliacs

While the transmission of hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection via blood transfusions has been suggested by some investigators, no such association was confirmed in a study of Israeli hemophiliacs.

Israel is endemic for HEV, previously termed enterically transmitted non-A, non-B hepatitis. Transmission is known to occur through the feco-oral route. A 1993 study suggested that HEV may be transmitted via blood transfusions, but this finding could not be confirmed in a 1994 study.
