HCV Infection Plays Insignificant Role in Liver-Damage Disorder

No significant association was found between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) in a large number of patients in Germany.

A high incidence of HCV infection previously was reported as responsible for precipitation of PCT and associated liver disease.

Ulrich Stolzel, Free University of Berlin, Berlin, Germany, and colleagues performed a study in a large number of patients with PCT in Germany to investigate the role of HCV and hepatitis B virus (HBV). They also analyzed to what extent daily alcohol consumption and hormone intake may have been additional risk factors for PCT and associated liver damage in this group of patients...
