New Test May Further Reduce Blood Donor Pool

The sensitivity and specificity of the Ortho hepatitis C virus (HCV) third-generation enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) were at least comparable to those of the same manufacturer's second-generation ELISA, concluded researchers from the Netherlands.

However, Hans Vrielink, M.D., and colleagues, Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service, Amsterdam, Netherlands, expressed concern that the use of third-generation ELISAs and immunoblot systems may result in false-positive reactions in a new population of blood donors ("Comparison of Two Anti-Hepatitis C Virus Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assays," Transfusion, July 1995;35(7):601-604).
