Technique Destroys HIV and Other Viruses in Donated Blood

Scientists at the New York Blood Center and VIMRx Pharmaceuticals Inc., Stamford, Connecticut, have developed a commercially feasible blood sterilization technique, the company reported.

The company said it plans to conduct additional scale-up work in 1995 and to file an Investigational New Drug Application early in 1996.

In May 1995, researchers at the New York Blood Center, New York University (NYU) Medical Center and the Weizmann Institute in Israel published a paper in the journal Transfusion, which showed that HIV and other viruses present in donated blood are destroyed by hypericin, a naturally occurring compound with strong antiviral activity....
