Screening Travellers for Hepatitis A Immunity Is Seldom Necessary

Screening for hepatitis A virus (HAV) immunity should not be performed before vaccination in individuals at low risk of previous HAV infection, researchers from Canada indicated.

Hepatitis A protection, in the form of vaccination, should be administered to North American travellers with no history of hepatitis A and no risk factors for the virus, who plan to travel to developing countries, indicated Raphael Saginur, M.D., Division of Infectious Disease, Department of Medicine, Ottawa Civic Hospital, Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, at the 35th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC), San Francisco, California, September 17-20, 1995.
