Low E2 Count Indicative of Good Response to INF

A low number of E2 variants prior to interferon therapy seems to be indicative of a good response to such treatment in chronic hepatitis C patients, according to an Australian study.

The study was reported at the 46th annual meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, held November 3-7, 1995 in Chicago, Illinois.

Rapid mutation of the hypervariable region (HVR) of the putative hepatitis C virus envelope glycoprotein E2 may be a major mechanism involved in evasion of the host immune system leading to a state of chronic viral infection.
