"Prevention of Hepatitis C (HCV) Transmission During Allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation by Treatment of the Donor with Interferon-(alpha)

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 37th Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology, held December 1-5, 1995, in Seattle, Washington, "Hepatitis C (HCV) infection has been linked to development of hepatic complications following bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Although testing of blood products for HCV has reduced the risk of transfusion-related hepatitis in transplant recipients, transmission can still occur from a HCV positive marrow donor. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is a sensitive test for identifying viral RNA present in sera.
