Spousal Infection Not Common in Japan

Hepatitis C virus infection is highly endemic in Japan, but neither vertical nor horizontal transmission between spouses seems to play an important role.

Vertical and horizontal transmission of hepatitis C virus in families has been documented, based on comparisons of a part of the nucleotide sequence of the HCV genome. The incidence of intrafamilial transmission of hepatitis C virus is controversial, however, and it is still largely unknown how HCV is spread among general populations.
