Isoniazid-Based Therapy Useful Despite Hepatotoxicity

Prophylactic isoniazid therapy is beneficial to all patients with pulmonary fibrotic lesions compatible with previous tuberculosis (TB), despite the risk of potentially life-threatening complications such as hepatitis, according to a report from Switzerland.

The report warns, however, that it is still unclear whether the benefits of such therapy outweigh possible side-effects.

Tuberculosis reactivation is increased among patients with chest X-rays showing untreated fibrotic lesions suggestive of healed, previous TB (so-called fibrotic lesions).
