"Serum Hepatitis C Virus RNA in Anti-HCV Negative Hemodialysis Patients."

According to the authors' abstract of an article published in Dialysis & Transplantation, "Thirty-one anti-HCV negative hemodialysis patients were studied to detect hepatitis C virus (HCV) in serum. Monthly alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels, and quarterly anti-HCV determinations, were recorded. HCV RNA was detected by nested polymerase chain reaction, and positive cases were followed up over the course of six months with determinations of ALT, anti-HCV and HCV RNA. As a control group, sera from 53 anti-HCV negative blood donors were examined for HCV RNA. Within the study group, HCV RNA was detected in 4 patients (12.9%).
