High-Dose IFN May Induce Psychiatric Side Effects

High-dose interferon treatment for chronic hepatitis may induce severe depression in some patients, according to preliminary findings from Italy.

The report was delivered at the VII International Symposium on Viral Hepatitis, held January 25-27, 1996 in Madrid, Spain.

Several studies presented at the Madrid conference suggested that high-dose interferon may be more effective in the treatment of chronic hepatitis than currently accepted standard doses of the agent.

In an interview with Hepatitis Weekly, conference chairman Vincente Carreno said the theme was perhaps the key message presented at the three-day meeting.
