HCV Infected Hemophiliacs Bad Candidates for IFN

Hemophiliacs with chronic hepatitis C infection do not respond to interferon therapy as well as patients without hemophilia, according to a report from Scotland.

Researcher John P. Hanley and colleagues from the University of Scotland reported ALT normalization in only 28 percent of hemophiliacs with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection treated with interferon after six months of therapy. The researchers also reported that sustained responses to interferon therapy were uncommon.

Virtually all hemophiliacs who received clotting factor concentrates before the introduction of effective viral-inactivation techniques were infected with HCV.
