According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Falk Symposium Molecular Diagnosis and Gene Therapy, held October 22-23, 1995, in Basel, Switzerland, "Presence of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) in serum of chronic carriers appears to be the most accurate marker of viral replication and has been employed to disease course in patients receiving anti-viral therapy. A quantitative test for HBV-DNA presence in serum is in this aspect a valuable determinant to the other serological markers of HBV infection.
