Virus Being Seen All Over Peru

Hepatitis E virus transmission is occurring in both the coastal and jungle regions of Peru, but is it not yet clear how important the virus is in the region.

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of epidemic and sporadic hepatitis in many tropical and developing areas.

"With the exception of two outbreaks in neighboring rural Mexico, the data of HEV transmission in North, Central, and South America are limited," researcher Kenneth C. Hyams and colleagues wrote ("HEV Infection in Peru," Clinical Infectious Diseases, April 1996;22:719-720).
