HEV No More Common in HIV Positive than HIV Negative Persons

French researchers reported that "... HIV infected patients do not appear to be at greater risk of HEV [hepatitis E virus] than HIV negative patients."

Dr. Francois Bissual and colleagues added that their "... data do not support the hypothesis of a sexual risk of transmission of HEV," according to a letter that appeared in the May 25, 1996, issue of the Lancet (Lancet 1996;347;1494).

Data from an Italian study suggested there is a high prevalence of HEV antibodies in HIV positive homosexual men. This prompted Bissual and colleagues at Bichet-Claude Bernard Hospital in Paris, France, to investigate the prevalence of HEV in HIV positive patients...
