IVDU's At Risk for Hepatitis C Even in Low HIV Areas

Intravenous drug users are at a significant risk for hepatitis C virus infection, even in areas with low HIV seroprevalence, according to a report from Italy.

In Italy, co-infection with HIV and HCV is high among injection drug users. HIV prevalence among IV drug users varies from between 5 percent to over 50 percent, and HCV prevalence has been estimated to range from 60 to 70 percent.
