TNF-(alpha) Involved in Host-Virus Interaction

The tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-(alpha)) system is involved in the host-virus interaction of chronic hepatitis B virus infection, according to a report from the United Kingdom.

"It is likely that the cytokine cascade, and not TNF-(alpha) alone, in conjunction with various other inflammatory mediators, is responsible for the hepatic changes in patients with chronic HBV infection," researcher Jane W.S. Fang and colleagues wrote ("Activation of the TNF-(alpha) System in the Liver in Chronic HBV Infection," American Journal of Gastroenterology, 1996;91(4):748-753).
