National Immunization Coverage Levels Remain High

U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials reported in the MMWR that national immunization coverage levels for preschool children "... remain at their highest levels for the most recent reporting period," (MMWR 1996;45:508-513).

According to National Immunization Survey data, coverage levels are at 75 percent for the recommended vaccination series of four doses diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine, three doses oral polio vaccine, and one dose measles vaccine. The most recent data also show that "... the most substantial increase among the recommended vaccinations for infants occurred for hepatitis B, with an increase of 9 percentage points...
