Targeted Antisense DNA Blocks HBV Replication

Preexposure of cells to targeted complexed antisense DNA can substantially block viral gene expression and viral replication after transfection of hepatitis B virus DNA, according to a report from Japan.

Previous studies have shown a potential application of antisense oligonucleotides in the treatment of viral infections. Investigators have shown that antisense oligonucleotides can be administered to hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected cells to block virus production in a preexisting infection. In addition, researcher Koichi Nakazono and colleagues have shown that antisense oligo DNA can be targeted to HBV infected hepatocytes in vitro, resulting in specific inhibition...
