Alcoholic hepatitis is a necrotizing inflammatory lesion of alcoholic liver injury that, in its severe form, is associated with high mortality. Several therapeutic drugs such as propylthiouracil and anabolic steroids, have been evaluated in the treatment of this disease, but none has been shown to decrease mortality.
Randomized trials of corticosteroid therapy in alcoholic hepatitis have been inconclusive.
