According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 22nd International Congress of the World Federation of Hemophilia, held June 23-28, 1996, in Dublin, Ireland, "The 'gold standard' for evaluation of the viral safety of hemophilia replacement factor concentrates is assessment in previously untreated hemophilia patients (PUPs) according to specific criteria of the International Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH). Nearly all such studies concentrated on safety with respect to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV).
