"Prevalence of Hepatitis C in Patients with Hemorrhagic Diseases in Saxonia-Anhalt (Germany)."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 22nd International Congress of the World Federation of Hemophilia, held June 23-28, 1996, in Dublin, Ireland, "Of all virus infections transmitted by blood and blood components Hepatitis C is especially important due to its chronicity and high risk of subsequent liver cirrhosis and of developing malignoma. Until 1989 our patients were treated almost exclusively with unpooled, not virus-inactivated blood preparations. Due to the special epidemiologic situation (in East Germany) all our patients are HIV negative. None of the patients receiving virus-inactivated plasma preparations developed hepatitis.
