Chinese Weight-Loss Herb Causes Hepatitis in Woman

University of Missouri researchers report the first incidence of acute hepatitis associated with the use of the Chinese herbal product, ma-huang.

"Our report and others in the literature indicate that the clinician should consider herbal medicines as a cause of unexplained liver injury," researcher Abdul Nadir and colleagues wrote ("Acute Hepatitis Associated with the Use of a Chinese Herbal Product, Ma-huang," The American Journal of Gastroenterology, July 1996;91(7):1436-1438).
