Hepatitis Not Significant HCC Cause in Low Endemic Areas

Chronic viral hepatitis appears to play a minimal role in the etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma in areas where infection is low, according to a report from Sweden.

"In contrast to areas with a high incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma, chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection seems to play a very minor role in the etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma in Sweden," researcher Jerzy Kaczynski and colleagues wrote ("Minor Role of HBV and HCV Infection in the Etiology of hepatocellular carcinoma in a Low-Endemic Area," August 1996;31(8):809-813).
