According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 36th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held September 15-18, 1996, in New Orleans, Louisiana, "A new viral agent that causes acute or chronic hepatitis has recently been described and named hepatitis G virus (HGV). This RNA virus belongs to the family of flaviviridae and is distantly related to the hepatitis C virus (HCV). While the first descriptions of HGV-infected patients included patients with transfusion-transmitted hepatitis or intravenous drug users, little is known about the incidence and outcome of vertical HGV transmission.
