Cytokine mRNA Differs in Hepatitis B and Biliary Cirrhosis

While the degree of chronic inflammation in the livers of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis and chronic hepatitis B are similar, the patterns of hepatic cytokine mRNA expression in the two diseases are strikingly different.

This was the finding of researchers from the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the Academic Medical Center of The Netherlands who examined whether precursors of cytokines are expressed in the livers of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) and chronic hepatitis B (CHB).
