Researchers Shed Light on Hepatitis B Mutation Preference

California researchers appear to have determined why the hepatitis B virus (HBV) carrying the double mutation A to T at nucleotide 1762 and G to A at 1764 often prevails over the wild-type virus during chronic infection.

"The results of our in vitro study resolve the discrepancy of previous clinical observations and indicate that this double mutation suppresses but does not abolish the e antigen phenotype," Victor E. Buckwold and colleagues wrote ("Effects of a Naturally Occurring Mutation in the HBV Viral Core Promoter on Precore Gene Expression and Viral Replication," Journal of Virology, September 1996;70(9):5845-5851).
