Interferon alfa (IFN-(alpha)) is the most successful drug currently in use for the treatment of liver disease caused by chronic hepatitis infection. Its most common side effect is an influenza-like syndrome that usually disappears after the first few treatment doses. Other possible toxicities, however, such as the induction of autoimmunity, are more dangerous.
