Lowering Dosage May Affect Long-Term Efficacy in Infants

Lowering the dosage of hepatitis B vaccine for infants and children may interfere with long-term protection against hepatitis, according to multicenter studies conducted in the United States.

Researcher Johanna Goldfarb and colleagues compared the immunogenicity and safety of 5- and 10-(mu)g doses of the Engerix-B recombinant hepatitis B virus vaccine (SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceuticals, Conshohocken, PA) and found that 10-(mu)g doses appear to be safe in both groups and may offer longer protection.
