CTL Response Contributes to Chronic Disease Pathogenesis

Cytotoxic T-lymphocyte response appears to contribute to chronic hepatitis C disease pathogenesis, but is not vigorous enough to eradicate the virus during infection in most patients, according to a report from the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California.

It is generally believed that immune-mediated mechanisms, such as HLA class I-restricted cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL), play an important role in viral clearance and disease pathogenesis in many viral infections.
