pre-S Genome Critical in Reinfection of Transplant Patients

Two newly published studies add to the growing evidence suggesting that mutations in the pre-S genome are critical in the hepatitis B virus reinfection of orthotopic liver transplant (OLT) patients.

The studies, reported by Christian Trautwein and colleagues of Germany and William F. Carman and colleagues of Scotland, were published in the September 1996 issue of Hepatology ("HBV Mutations in the Pre-S Genome Before and After Liver Transplantation," Hepatology 1996;24(3):482-488 and "HBV Envelope Variation After Transplantation With and Without Hepatitis B Immune Globulin Prophylaxis," Hepatology 1996;24(3):489-493).
