3TC May Help Clear Hepatitis B in HIV+ Patients

The anti-AIDS drug lamivudine may have had a role in the clearance of chronic hepatitis B virus infection in a patient coinfected with HIV, according to a report from Washington D.C.'s Georgetown University.

"The experience with this patient argues for further investigation and clinical trials of agents such as lamivudine in patients who are coinfected with hepatitis B virus (HBV) and HIV," researchers Steven M. Schnittman and Phillip F. Pierce wrote ("Potential Role of 3TC in the Clearance of Chronic HBV Infection in a Patient Coinfected with HIV-1," Clinical Infectious Diseases, September 1996;23:638-639).
