According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 1996 Proceedings of the Shanghai International Symposium on Liver Cancer and Hepatitis, held March 5-7, 1996, in Shanghai, China, "Epidemiological surveys of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) have shown that several risk factors are associated with this common neoplasm, infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) is especially important in Africa and Southeast Asia. However, in Japan, the proportion of HBsAg-positive patients with HCC is decreasing, whereas there is a increase in HCC with hepatitis C virus (HCV) that was associated with the increasing number of patients with chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis with HCV.
