HIV Contributing to HCV Infections in U.S.

Increased hepatitis C virus RNA concentrations associated with HIV infection could be contributing to high rates of hepatitis C infection among urban populations in the United States, researchers from Baltimore, Maryland's Johns Hopkins School of Medicine report.

"(Our) data suggest that HIV infection and possibly HIV progression increase hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA concentrations, leading to enhanced HCV transmission," researcher David L. Thomas and colleagues wrote ("Effect of HIV on HCV Infection Among Injecting Drug Users," Journal of Infectious Diseases, October 1996;176:690-695).
