Bovine Sera Contamination May Pose Problem

Most commercially available bovine sera are contaminated with bovine viral diarrhea virus, according to a report from the U.S. National Institutes of Health.

Researcher Masayuki Yanagi and colleagues found that, while there is no evidence that bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is infectious, bovine sera should be screened for this virus by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) when used in conjunction with hepatitis C virus or for the development or production of hepatitis C vaccine.

"Our study provides evidence that reliable screening of bovine sera from contamination with BVDV or other adventitious viruses can be achieved only by sensitive RT-PCR,"...
