"Frequency of Antibody Resistant Mutants among Mothers and Infants with Chronic Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) Infection."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 10th International Congress of Virology, held August 11-16, 1996, in Jerusalem, Israel, "Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) is the major envelope protein of HBV. Antibody to HBsAg (anti-HBs) binds to the a determinant region at aa positions 124 to 147. The a determinant is highly conserved at the amino acid level and changes could produce variants resistant to anti-HBs neutralization. The frequency of these mutations was determined by direct sequencing of PCR amplicons from infants who failed postexposure prophylaxis, as well as their mothers.
