Therapeutic Vaccines Offer Promise for Chronic HBV

Two therapeutic vaccines for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B virus have been shown to be safe for use in humans, paving the way for future efficacy studies.

In a study conducted by the manufacturer, SmithKline Beecham Biologicals (Rixensart, Belgium), the vaccines elicited mild local adverse effects in the majority of patients and general flu-like symptoms in just under one-third of the study's 20 subjects.

These findings were presented by M. Wettendorff at the International Business Communications' conference, "Hepatitis: Latest Therapeutic Developments for Hepatitis B and C," held January 30-31, 1997 in Washington D.C.
