According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 1997 Annual Meeting of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, held March 1-7, 1997, in Orlando, Florida, "Background: Protective immunity induced by vaccination with hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) is associated with production of a neutralizing antibody (anti-HBsAb) against 'group a determinant (B-cell epitope)'. Vaccine failure due to immune escape mutations (IEM) has been reported within this B-cell domain of amino acid residue 124-148 but not within the T-cell domain.
