Urinary Corproporphyrin Levels Increased in HCV+

Coproporphyrin excretion appears increased in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, regardless of whether they are coinfected with HIV.

"This could be related to hepatic changes induced by the viruses," researcher Bernard Cribier and colleagues wrote ("Abnormal Urinary Coproporphyrin Levels in Patients Infected by HCV With or Without HIV," Archives of Dermatology, December 1996;132:1448-1504). "Our results do not support the hypothesis of a direct viral effect on the porphyrin metabolism. Infection with HIV, HCV, or both may be a major triggering factor, but is not sufficient to induce porphyria."
