"Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Patients with Porphyria Cutanea Tarda."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 31st Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of the Liver, held August 25-29, 1996, in Geneva, Switzerland, "Chronic liver disease is found in almost all patients (pts) with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCE). To define the natural history of chronic liver disease of PCT pts, we studied 61 Italian pts (3 F and 58 M, age 55 ± 9.5) followed from 1981 to 1995 (median 4 ± 4.5 yrs). HBsAg was positive in 5 (8%), anti HCV and HCV-RNA in 54 (88%), alcohol abuse in 23 (38%) and iron overload in 33 (54%). All pts underwent liver biopsy at the time of PCT diagnosis.
