"Hemodialysis Reduces the Viral Load in HCV Infected Uremic Patients."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 4th International Meeting on Hepatitis C Virus and Related Viruses, Molecular Virology and Pathogenesis, held March 6-10, 1997, in Kyoto, Japan, "Patients on chronic hemodialysis (HD) have a high prevalence and incidence of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, due to blood transfusions and nosocomial transmission but clinically evident acute or chronic hepatitis are rare in these patients. It has been hypothesized that HD treatment per se could preserve patients from an aggressive course of HCV infection and it has been recently suggested that HCV particles may be trapped at the membrane surface during dialysis.
