According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 4-8, 1997, in Miami Beach, Florida, "Accurate quantitation of viral nucleic acids in patient specimens has been shown to be useful in both disease prognosis and monitoring of patients on antiviral therapy. This report describes an instrument system (COBAS AMPLICOR) that performs all of the steps necessary for the PCR amplification and quantitative detection of HCV RNA. The 5'UTR of HCV is amplified using a single primer pair and with DNA polymerase in a single-tube, single-enzyme reaction system that results in equivalent amplification of all known genotypes. ...
