ICGN Development Dominates Disease Course in Some

In certain groups of patients coinfected with HIV and hepatitis C virus, the development of immune complex glomerulonephritis may dominate the clinical course of disease.

HIV associated nephropathy (HIVAN) is characterized by focal 'collapsing', glomerulosclerosis, severe tubulointerstitial disease, and distinctive ultrastructural findings. It is the most common clinicopathologic syndrome in HIV infected patients undergoing renal biopsy, but predominantly affects blacks.
