According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 97th General Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology, held May 4-8, 1997, in Miami Beach, Florida, "Aim of the Study: To assess the significance of HCV RNA as a diagnostic tool for HCV vertical transmission. Patients and Methods: Fifty-three children were studied: 28 were born to mothers with HCV infection (group A) and 25 to mothers co-infected with both HCV and HIV (group B). Testing of anti-HCV antibodies (ELISA and RIBA) and HCV RNA (PCR) was performed every three months (from birth when possible).
