High Donor Prevalence, Low Posttransfusion Rate in Germany

A high prevalence of hepatitis G virus (HGV) and its strain variant, the GB agent (GBV-C), was found in unpaid volunteer blood donors at a blood center in Germany.

"In comparison to agents like HCV [hepatitis C virus] that are primarily transmitted parenterally, HGV/GBV-C has an exceptionally high prevalence," wrote W. Kurt Roth, M.D., Institute for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohematology, Red Cross Blood Donor Service, Frankfurt, Germany, and colleagues ("Prevalence of Hepatitis G Virus and Its Strain Variant, the GB Agent, in Blood Donations and Their Transmission to Recipients," Transfusion, June 1997;37:651-656).
